A Journey From Baghdad to Beyond
Born in Baghdad, Nazhat is married with children. Early in her marriage she faced traditions that discouraged women from employment outside the home. Nazhat was ready to give up on her dreams until she realized her daughters would face the same destiny. So she decided to make changes that would benefit the whole family. Today Nazhat makes beautiful candles for local and international clients. Her daughters have graduated from college and her husband supports her entrepreneurial aspirations.
"I am a new woman who can work and support others, the woman that I always loved and dreamed to be." -Nazhat Hadi, August 2015
The Aga Khan Museum Shop is a proud supporter of Nazhat’s work and strive to make her craft available to as many as possible to enjoy.
A treasure trove of one-of-a-kind objects sourced from Marrakesh to Marbella and Istanbul to Isfahan, I have hand-selected each item to give you the opportunity to take home a piece of the Museum experience.
Throughout my travels I have met with multi-generational families who have spent decades perfecting their artisanal crafts. From the ceramicists in Izmir to the mother-of-pearl inlay makers in Cairo, all of the artisans take inspiration from their surroundings and the rich heritage of their communities to produce works of art that exemplify unique craftsmanship. Meeting such passionate artists has also inspired me to design product exclusively for the Aga Khan Museum Shop, which has become a destination for gifts that inspire the mind, excite the heart, and capture the spirit of the rich material culture on display at the Museum.
Senior Retail Operations Manager & Product Designer Specialist
We are opening a new window onto the people, places, and ideas behind the splendour on display. Starting in November, the Museum’s Senior Retail Operations Manager Shoheb Gwaduri will interview designers and thinkers working at the intersection of art, commerce, and community empowerment. Watch this space for the latest instalments of the Artisans’ Exchange conversation series.
