The Moon: A Voyage Through Time
Edited by Christiane Gruber

As the earth’s only natural satellite, the moon has intrigued and inspired humans since the dawn of civilization. This book commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the first landing on the moon in 1969. While the landmark lunar mission proved a giant leap for mankind, humans inhabiting the sublunary world have been wayfarers into the celestial spheres in thought, word, practice, and art since time immemorial. The Moon: A Voyage Through Time, published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at The Aga Khan Museum in Toronto from March 9 – August 18, 2019, takes the reader on a journey through the moon’s pivotal role in Ancient Near Eastern civilizations, the Islamic faith, scientific inquiry, the portable arts, Persian Sufi poetry, Ottoman and Mughal visual and material cultures, and modern and contemporary art. In this journey across time and space, artworks made in the Middle East and beyond help us to understand our ongoing fascination and engagement with the moon.
